SCR replacement in Sebring Chargers

Preliminary article... editing and pictures still left to do!!!

In regards to the installation of the SCR in the Sebring Automatic Charger found on the Comuta-Cars.  Lets first start with the two diodes mounted to the chassis just under the edge of the transformer.  They rarely go bad so dont mess with them.  The SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) is the thing mounted to the side of the enclosure.  The problem with quick answers here is that there are 3 different types used; there is the Anode stud mount, the Cathode stud mount and the insulated stud mount.  They are all electrically wired the same but physically differently.  On the side of all the SCRs is a picture of an arrowhead hitting a target.  That symbol shows the cathode, anode and gate.  The cathode (-) being the target (line) and the anode (+) being the arrowhead.  The black wire from the transformer goes to the anode along with the green wire from the PCB (Printed Circuit board) usually the big terminal coming out the top.  The yellow wire from the PCB and a purple wire go to the ring at the stud end (the purple one may go through a circuit breaker)*.  The white wire from the PCB goes to the little terminal on the top of the SCR.

On some embodiments the enclosure was used as the plus line on others it is just the heat sink.  You may have other wires that go to the charge light or other indicators.  I recommend reading the Charger section of the Nu-kar service manual for the CitiCar and Comuta-Car; Ive drawn pictures in it for you.  Both the manual and this article are copyrighted all rights reserved.
